How to Type in Chinese Characters on Your U.S. Keyboard

Typing in Chinese is easy with this step by step guide...especially helpful for students and teachers!

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    So you don't lose any documents, please save files and close.

  2. Step 2

    On your computer, select "Start" and "Control Panel", then select "Regional and Language Options."

  3. Step 3

    Under "Language", check the second box, "Install Files for East Asian Languages", then click "Apply", save files and close and restart your computer.

  4. Step 4

    Then, to set your keyboard, on your computer, please select "Start", "Control Panel" and then select "Regional and Language Options".

  5. Step 5

    Select "Language", select "Details", and select "Install files for complex script..." and "Install files for East Asian languages".

  6. Step 6

    Select "ADD", Select "Input Language", and select "Chinese (PRC)" - this selection should be made in most cases, as it will allow you to type in simplified Chinese, which is what most US schools and universities teach.

  7. Step 7

    Back to the previous screen, click "OK", or Click "Apply" then "OK".

  8. Step 8

    At the bottom of your computer screen on the right hand side, now you will be able see the icon reading “EN” – (English).

    Select this icon, choose “CH”, now you will be able to input Chinese.

    Try it! Open a blank Word document and start typing pinyin (something easy, like "Wo ai ni" and see what happens!
