Have A Green Thumb Apartment

Just because you live in an apartment complex doesn't mean that you have to tuck away your green thumb. No, it simply means that you have to be a little more creative than the average home owner. Listed below are a few tips to help your green thumb grown without grass, a backyard and a cute lawn boy.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

First you'll need to make a trip to your local nursery and pick out a variety of small plants that can thrive indoors with minimum sunlight or outdoors in varying degrees of weather if you'll be placing your plants on an outdoor balcony. In addition to your plant selections make sure to grab some eye catching planters for your new plants. Different shapes, sizes and colors will add a lot of pizzazz to your apartment landscape. And if you don't have these items you'll also need some potting soil, a water container, gloves and a set of small gardening tools to help you get started.

  2. Step 2

Next, find a dry work area where you can place all of your items and being the process of re-planting your new purchase of plants into their jazzy pots. After you've dressed your hands with your sporty new gloves, fill your new pots halfway with fresh potting soil.

  3. Step 3

Take the plant out of it's original container and place into their new homes. Then fill the remainder of the pot with potting soil, making sure that your plant can stand on it's own. If you see that it is unstable add a post inside of the pot to help support your plant, making sure to secure it with some string or a piece of old cloth (my mom would use torn t-shirts). If you really want to add some variety, place several different plants inside of the same container. This will really give your balcony area a garden feel in addition to saving you a few bucks.

  4. Step 4

Lastly, water your freshly potted plant(s) and following the directions that come with it; making sure you've placed it in an area where it will receive the appropriate amount of sunlight to survive. You should water your plants at least once a week and re-pot with fresh potting soil at least once a year. Remember to protect outdoor plants during the winter months with an old sheet or blanket.
