Matching Shower Curtain and Window Treatment
Matching Shower Curtain and Window Treatment
Peggy Strickland, "aka" Momose

While finding and installing beautiful curtains for your bathroom shower is not usually a problem, finding the right sized window curtains that blend can be difficult. And finding material that actually matches your shower curtain can be a seemingly hopeless task.

You may encounter other multiple problems:

Many bathrooms have large leaded glass windows above a garden tub, or other windows of unusual size. So buying ready-made curtains will not work.

Like your shower curtain, you want window curtains that can be easily removed for washing.

Those oversized, opaque bathroom windows often have casement frames that don’t make it easy to mount curtain rods.

You need multiple layers of curtain to block the sun, or for additional privacy.

Too many impediments? Try this idea for an easy solution.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 Fabric Shower Curtains
  • 2 Shower Curtain Rods
  • 2 Packs Shower Curtain Hangers
  1. Step 1

Shop first for the perfect shower curtain.

The prettiest ones are often made from fabric with interesting designs or woven texture. A shower curtain liner will take care of keeping the fabric fresh and dry, so pick your curtain to be esthetically pleasing.

Purchase a shower curtain rod and hangers to match the décor of your bathroom.

Tension rods work great and come in a variety of styles, colors and finishes. Materials range from plastic to metal or wood. Purchase a good one with sufficient diameter to be durable and attractive.

Hangers run the gamut from plainest plastic or metal to decorative and unusual shapes with varying degrees of ornamentation.

  3. Step 3

Now, double your purchase – Two shower curtains, two liners, two tension rods, and two packs of hangers.

Your second set-up will be for your bathroom window.

  4. Step 4

You will use the second shower curtain, liner, rod and hangers for your bathroom windows exactly the same as for the shower curtain, except for one small difference.

Simply cut the length of the second shower curtain and liner to fit the bathroom window.

The liner will most likely not require any hemming, as it is made from vinyl and will not fray.

If the window shower curtain is of a material that may fray, leave enough length to turn and sew a narrow hem.

Using the second set of shower curtain hangers attach the liner and newly shortened curtain to the tension rod and hang.

The window curtain can now be pulled aside to admit sunlight, and with the pre-cut holes and shower curtain hangers, can be easily taken down for washing, then re-hung.

  6. Step 6

You will have most likely spent no more money doubling your shower curtain purchase than you would have buying materials to sew window curtains. Not to mention that you now have perfectly matching curtains with very little effort!

    So, ENJOY!

Tips & Warnings
  • If tension rods will not work for both your shower and window, purchase a similar rod to be mounted to the window frame with screws.
  • Unless the bathroom window is extremely small, you can use the entire width of the shower curtain. Simply hem to the proper length, and gather the curtain to fit the rod.
  • Tension rods can come in different lengths, so make sure that your purchase for the window rod fits within the space.
  • My bathroom window over the tub is made of clear glass, so it needs additional thickness to block some direct sunlight. I simply added two liners behind the main fabric to protect my beautiful curtain from becoming faded by the sun.
