  1. Step 1

What is the difference between a prepaid debit card, a debit card and a credit card. A prepaid debit card is not linked to a bank account like a debit card and since you prepay you never have to worry about a huge bill at the end of the month. It is a safer way to shop online.

  2. Step 2

There are many types of prepaid debit cards out there. Which one is right for you. First, you should choose the credit card brand, ie Visa, Mastercard, American Express. Visa is the most practical, but it is a rare merchant that doesn't have a merchant account with Mastercard. Since American Express charges slightly higher rates for the merchants, many don't accept AMEX.

  3. Step 3

Next find out if there is an annual fee or monthly fees. There are many prepaid debit cards out there that don't charge any fees, so avoid any cards that charge.

  4. Step 4

Try to find a prepaid debit card that does not charge for overdrafts and does not have any balance minimums. The other fees to avoid are for loading your card, fees for customer service and fees for activation. It is possible to find prepaid cards with no upfront fees.

  5. Step 5

Lastly, look for a prepaid card that provides discounts, cash back or incentives like points. They are out there. Don't spend your money, just so you can spend your money.
