How to Change Motion Sensor Batteries
Not knowing how to properly change and test the batteries in a motion sensor may result in costly repairs, false alarms, or a malfunctioning home alarm system. Motion sensor batteries (in a wireless alarm system) will usually last for at least three to six months. This depends on the motion sensor manufacturer, the battery manufacturer, and the amount of traffic that passes in front of the motion sensor on a regular basis. Most home alarm systems will detect a weak motion sensor battery and alert the owner with some type of beep or visual indicator. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Make sure your system is disarmed, and call your monitoring service provider and inform them of your intent to change the batteries in your motion sensor. Some systems will send "tamper" signals when you remove the cover from one of the devices, even if the system is disarmed.
-
2
Look for a hidden screw or tab on the motion sensor. Some models are sealed with a screw, some with a tab, and some have no visible buttons, switches, tabs or screws. Before removing the cover of the motion sensor, make sure to identify which type you are working with. Carefully remove the cover the way it was designed to come off. Forcing the cover off may damage the motion sensor.

3
Remove the batteries from the motion sensor and replace them with new batteries, then carefully replace the cover. If there was any kind of spring or switch inside, make sure it is engaged properly when replacing the cover.

4
Activate the "test" function of the alarm system. The system will relay signals to all sensors and report on whether they are working properly. Some systems will communicate with beeps, others with a voice, and others with a visual display. Once all zones have been verified as functioning properly, call you monitoring service and tell them that you have finished.

Tips & Warnings
Some motion sensors have a light that comes on every time it detects movement. Usually there is an option to disable the light (without affecting the functionality of the motion sensor). Disabling the light will greatly enhance the life of your motion sensor batteries.
