Stencil a Wooden Adirondack Chair (or any other wooden chair)

If you think your Adirondack chairs or other outdoor wood furniture look plain, you can dress them up with stencils. Easy and inexpensive, stenciling is quick and fun.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Latex paint (labeled for exterior or outdoor use)
  • Stencil
  • Stencil brush or foam brush
  • Painters’ tape
  • Paper plate
  • Newspapers
  • Gentle cleaner and paper towels
  1. Step 1

Protect the area under the project with newspapers or a tarp then clean the chair where you want to stencil.

  2. Step 2

Tape the stencil to the project at the desired location.

  3. Step 3

Pour a small amount (a tablespoon or so) of paint into a paper plate. Dab the brush into the paint and then dab it on newspaper or the edge of the paper plate so that it’s almost dry.

  4. Step 4
    Apply the paint very lightly.

    Apply the paint very lightly.

With a dabbing or pouncing motion, apply paint over the stencil. Hold the stencil flat with your free hand. Don’t brush the paint on, or it will seep under the stencil, ruining the imprint.

Remove the stencil while the paint is still wet.

  5. Step 5

If paint seeped under the stencil, quickly wipe off the wet paint with a damp paper towel. The paint can usually be wiped off when it’s still very wet.

  6. Step 6

Move the stencil to a new location and repeat the painting process. Be careful not to touch the wet paint that you just applied. If the images are placed close together, you may have to wait until the first ones dry before you attempt the next ones.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can quicken dry time with a hand-held hair dryer.
  • I like Rust-Oleum “Painters Touch” paint from home improvement stores. Crafts stores also sell outdoor paint, like Folk Art Outdoor Paint.
  • Don’t buy a lot of paint; in stenciling, a little really does go a long way.
  • To add detail, stencil the image in different colors. For example, stencil flower petals one color, then stencil the centers a second color.
