How to Find The Best Shipping Rates

Shipping packages has become increasingly more expensive over the years.
Here are the best methods for finding the best shipping rates.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Computer
  • Shipping supplies
  1. Step 1

When shipping an item the price is usually determined by weight and/or size.
Check on USPS.com for current rates.
You need to know the weight of your package, the zip code it is leaving from and the zip code of it's destination.

  2. Step 2

When you enter the USPS site choose the calculate postage option.
Then choose whether you are shipping internationally, domestic or business shipping.
Next choose size, weight and destination.

  3. Step 3

You will receive an entire list of prices and services.
Media mail is the best money saving way to ship books, tapes, DVD's, CD's and all media type products.
It is only for media related items and any additional items shipped with it will end up having the mail returned to you at your expense. Media mail is subject to search. Occasionally you will have a book or CD that is light enough to go first class and actually cost less than media mail.

  4. Step 4

There are flat rate priority envelopes. These are for shipping inside the USA or internationally.
They are a great value if you can fit your item into them.
They are free to use and so are the priority shipping boxes. All priority materials must ship priority.
You can order priority shipping materials to be delivered free directly to your home. These materials include, boxes, tape, stickers, envelopes and more.

  5. Step 5

If you have enough volume in shipping you can purchase a postage scale or postage meter, print your shipping out and have the mail carrier pick up directly from your home or business.
Shipping online generally costs less but media mail cannot be done online.

  6. Step 6

    Military mail overseas.
Military mail that is going to a APO or FPO address is shipped at a big ( huge) discount.
You will be asked at the post office if you want to get it there quicker by shipping it priority.
Priority ONLY gets it to the ending postal destination quicker. It does not mean the military is going to pick your item first or get it to your soldier, Marine, sailor... any faster. So there isn't any need for the additional price you will be paying.

Tips & Warnings
  • Package all items securely.
  • Only use media mail for media items.
