follow these instruction to create a small compost enclosure that can be taken down when no longer needed

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Wire Mess, Mooring Post, Large Hammer, Pliers
  1. Step 1

First thing you will want to do is select the location of your compost pile. It should be in an area that will not be visible as an eyesore. Next to a garage or barn, near a back fence are good sites.

  2. Step 2

Once you have decided on a site you must determine the size you want to work with. If you are only using it for a small garden you will only want to make it no more than 6 feet by 6 feet. I suggest 4 by 4 as an ideal size.

  3. Step 3

If you plan to move the pile at sometime in the future then be sure to place a piece of wood down so that the compost pile does not mix with the ground surface. it makes it easier to clean up.

Now drive a post at the edge of each corner of the wood. Make sure it is driven deep enough that it will not come loose without some effort. You will need two more post at the opening (6 in all).

  4. Step 4

To determine the size of the mesh to use decide how high you want the pile to become. I suggest using 4 foot as a good size. Begin at the opening and attach one end to the post with wire using a pair of pliers to twist tight.
Secure at the top and the bottom and two places equal distance in the middle. Then continue around to the other post repeating the procedure until you reach the final post. Be sure to stretch the wire tight. At the opening you may want to wrap the wire once around the post to avoid snagging. To block the compost material from falling out use a piece of plywood or like material in the opening.

Tips & Warnings
  • if it is dry water the compost to ensure decomposition. I add some lime to the mix and stir it or turn it at least once a month. Only put items that will decompose(No sticks, plastic, plastic wrap, Styrofoam, etc).
  • Keep a plastic coffee can with lid under your sink to dump egg shells, coffee grounds, tea bags, rinds and such. Bread Crumb, crackers, cookie crumbs are other items you can put in the compost.
  • Grass clippings, leaves and dead plants also make good compost.
  • Some people like to add earth worms to the compost. If you fish and have bait left over throw it in the mix.
  • If you don't want the birds and the animals going into your compost you will need to cover it with a tarp or plastic sheeting.
