An apple-cinnamon crisp dessert doesn't have to be just for dessert: It can be reheated or eaten cold as a breakfast treat or a snack. While any apples will work, the tart taste of Granny Smiths combine particularly well with the sweetness of the rest of the ingredients. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 10 to 12 Granny Smith apples
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • Lemon juice
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup butter or margarine
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Cream, whipping cream or ice cream (optional)
  • 9-by-12-inch baking dish

Instructions

      Wash and thinly slice the apples into a bowl. Sprinkle in a 1/2 cup of sugar and add a few drops of lemon juice and stir gently. Grease the baking dish and put the apple mixture into it. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

      Combine the flour, the remaining sugar, the baking powder, the salt and the egg and mix until flaky. Pour over the apple mixture.

      Melt the butter or margarine and pour over the mixture. Sprinkle with the cinnamon. Bake for 30 to 40 minutes, until lightly browned on the top. Serve warm with milk, cream, whipped cream or ice cream.
