How to Transport Your Kids by Bicycle
Transporting your kids by bicycle is an excellent way to "enjoy the journey." Besides avoiding the hustle and bustle of car traffic, you are taking the healthy route for all involved -- getting fresh air and exercise. You also gain the opportunity to train your children as you ride with them about bicycle safety. You can enjoy viewing nature and community festivities by taking advantage of this slower mode of transportation with your family.

1
A bike ride helps your child get familiar with his neighborhood. Get a toddler bike seat to attach to your bicycle. Stimulate your child's curiosity while riding along your neighborhood streets. Take the opportunity to point out objects or places your child will recollect the next time you ride in the area, such as the community library, playground or pool. This gives him bearings and familiarizes him with his home location.

Use a traditional tandem bike and take your child out for a ride. Put a basket on the front of the bike so you are able to frequent the corner market or go to the ice cream parlor together. If it's within a comfortable riding distance, ride your bicycle built for two together to drop off your child at a friend's house. Then pick her up when it is time to come home and hear all about the outing she had while you are enjoying the ride.

Ride a three-wheeler with a large basket built into the back for family recreation. Pile the kids in the basket and take a quick ride around the block using the sidewalk, or go to the community park and ride them around the bike path provided. Since the three-wheeler holds itself up, take the opportunity to rest along the way; talk, laugh, sing, or discuss what you have enjoyed or wish to do next on your route. Take the time to discuss and help your kids understand bicycling safety precautions for when they are riding bicycles on their own. For example, you can tell them to "Ride on the right-hand side and allow room for oncoming bikes to get by easily."

Enjoy family outings riding bikes together. Let your kids ride alongside you, once they are old enough to maneuver a bike by themselves. Get to your point of destination as a family affair. Enjoy the journey and the company of your children.
