Bunting in baseball is a lost art. However it can be an important part of a baseball team's offense, whether bunting for a hit or advancing a runner.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Baseball bat
  • Baseball
  1. Step 1

Bunt only at pitches in the strike zone.

  2. Step 2

Start high, holding the bat at the top of the strike zone, and then come down.

  3. Step 3

Bend the knees somewhat, keeping weight on the balls of your feet.

  4. Step 4

Keep the bat level, in front of your body, and in front of the plate.

  5. Step 5

Grip the bat lightly, with a V between your thumb and index finger. Ease up on your grip of the bat as the ball is met - let your hands and arms give a little.

  6. Step 6

Practice both the sacrifice bunt and bunting for a hit. The push bunt (for a right handed hitter) and drag bunt (for a left handed hitter)can be a major weapon for a fast runner who is trying to reach base on a hit. It can be used when the first baseman is playing deep. The pitch is pushed or dragged with the bat; the hitter aims for the hole between first and second base. It must be pushed or dragged past the pitcher in order to be effective.

Tips & Warnings
  • Becoming an effective bunter takes lots of practice.
  • Practice both the sacrifice bunt and bunting for a hit.
  • Always wear a helmet when batting during a baseball game.
