Step 1
Water your lawn and garden early in the day.
This step will help to minimize water loss due to evaporation that occurs in much warmer hours later in the day. It is also more desirable than watering in the overnight hours because it will reduce dampness of leaves, etc., which can encourage fungal diseases. -
Step 2
Water deeply and less often.
This encourages deep, mature root systems that make for more stable and healthy plants. -
Step 3
Purchase a high-quality water hose.
Don't go cheap--You'll likely go through several leaky lower-grade hoses that will cost you more money in the long run and just end up in the landfill. -
Step 4
Utilize drip irrigation where possible.
Impact sprinklers and other sprinklers aerate water as they disperse it, resulting in increased water loss. Use a sprinkler hose or soaker hose where practical. -
Step 5
Replace or repair dripping faucets or hose bibs promtly to save water and money!
This one is a no-brainer and self-explanatory. Use common sense. Many times a leak can be fixed easily with a simple 1/4-turn of the packing nut, located just beneath the handle. -
Step 6
Release pressure on your hose to extend hose life.
Release pressure post-watering by shutting off the water and engaging the trigger on your water wand or other hose-end controller device. Make sure and point this device directly at a friend or family member while releasing, because saving water and money should be fun!
