Eliminate fear of the unknown-talk to the MRI technologist about the procedure. The technologist should thoroughly explain what is going to happen so you know what to expect.

    • 2

Bring a favorite CD or your MP3 player-many Imaging centers have headphones that you can use to listen to music. This may keep your mind focused on something else.

    • 3

Talk to the technologist-It's important that you tell the technologist what bothers you. The technologist may be able to offer you a wash cloth to cover your eyes, additional cushions or supports so you are as comfortable as possible and an emergency ball that when squeezed will alert the technologist that you want to come out immediately.

Reduce caffeine and sugar-rich foods for several hours prior to your appointment. These products release adrenaline and/or stimulate your adrenal glands which can add to feelings of anxiety.

    • 5

Use relaxing breathing methods. Gently close your eyes, paying attention to the natural, effortless movement of your breathing cycle. Pay attention to the inhale, then the slight pause, followed by the natural exhale and then another slight pause. Do this for three or four cycles. As your exhale relax your muscles, especially your jaw and shoulders. Let go of the tension in your chest and stomach. Let your arms and legs relax. Let your forehead relax. On the in-breath silently think "I am" and on the exhale think "letting go or becoming calmer" or use any other calming phrase that suits you. Continue this for 3 or 4 minutes.

Evaluate your pain level. It is necessary for you to hold still for the MRI test. If you are claustrophobic, any pain you may have may increase your anxiety. Talk to your physician if you feel pain medication may be needed.
