We all love to save money, right? There are lots of ways you can do this. One of the ways is to cut back on how much electricity you use. Let's look at some ways to do this.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • energy efficient light bulbs
  • determination
  1. Step 1

A great way to save on electricity is to replace all of your light bulbs with energy efficient bulbs. You can find these bulbs at your local department stores, drug stores, etc. These bulbs are not cheap, however, they save a tremendous amount of electricity over time, and they have a long life. You can replace a 100w bulb with an energy efficient 23w bulb. It will be just a bright at the 100w bulb.

  2. Step 2

The next thing you can do is to unplug electrical items when you are not using them. You may think that if you are not using the device it doesn't draw electricity. This is not true. If it is plugged into an electrical socket, it is drawing some level of electricity. Things that are simple to unplug when not in use are cell phone chargers, toasters, can openers, and other small kitchen appliances. Items such as a home computer, you won't want to unplug, but make sure you shut it down when not in use.

  3. Step 3

Your heating and cooling system at home has a fan that uses electricity to operate. Make sure you set your fan on "auto", not just "on". This will have the fan kick on when needed to obtain the desired temperature. If you leave it in the "on" position, it will run constantly, wasting electricity. Try not to turn the unit off if possible. It takes more electricity to start it back up and obtain the desired temperature.

Tips & Warnings
  • Turn off lights when not in a room
  • Don't hold the refrigerator door open longer than necessary
  • Replace electrical items with battery operated if possible
  • Use caution when replacing light bulbs, turn light switch to "off" position
