Interested in composting but always end up with large chunks still not yet composted? Read on for how-to reuse household items as a easy compost sifters.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use a Racket - a tennis racket that is! Have an old tennis racket lying around in the back of the garage? Well, dig it out and put it to use again! Using a tennis racket to 'sift' through your compost will remove large clumps as well as any not quite ready material in there. Simple and easy!
You could also hold the tennis racket over another bucket or wheelbarrow, using a shovel, scoop some compost onto the tennis racket and push it through the webbing into the wheelbarrow for fine compost ready for the garden. Any large pieces left behind just get tossed back into the compost pile.

  2. Step 2

A fan in the garden? Now, I personally have a few of these old, rusty box fans hiding out somewhere in the garage, and I'm sure you do to! Come on, it's ok to admit it. :)
Take either the front or back grating off and remove all the 'guts' of the fan including the blades, motor and wire. All that will remain is one grate attached to the square metal 'box'. Good! Now take that, as is, out to the compost pile.
You can easily set that on top of another bucket, wheelbarrow, or pail. Scoop the compost into the fan box. Shake to sift, or using the back of a hand held shovel, squish the compost through the grates.
Tad-dad! Magic! You now have fine sifted compost for your plants.

  3. Step 3

Did you complete some home improvements around the house or the a/c unit? Have one of those metal grates hanging around that used to cover the opening where the air filter is? Put it to use in the garden as a compost sifter.
Same as the box fan idea only without the sides.
