How to Change a Windows Partition

Each time that you connect a new hard drive or partition to your PC computer, the Windows operating system automatically assigns it a drive letter label. Your primary hard drive partition must always remain the C: drive, but you can change other drive assignments as long as you are an administrator on the computer you are using.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • PC running Windows XP or later
  1. Step 1

    Log on to your PC computer with an account that has administrative privileges.

  2. Step 2

    Open the Start menu and click on the "Control Panel" icon.

  3. Step 3

    Go to the "Administrative Tools" folder and double-click "Computer Management."

  4. Step 4

    Click on the "Disk Management" tool on the left side of the window.

  5. Step 5

    Right-click on the name of the Windows partition that you want to change and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths" from the list of options.

  6. Step 6

    Click on the "Change" button and then choose a new drive letter to assign to the selected Windows partition.

  7. Step 7

    Hit "Yes" to confirm the change.
