Disk errors are common and may cause myriad issues in Windows Vista. Problems such as cross-linked or damaged files, bad sectors and lost clusters will cause the operating system to behave in unexpected ways. The chkdsk utility is provided with the standard installation of Vista. Run the chkdsk utility to find and correct problematic disk errors.

Instructions

      Log on to the computer with Administrator rights.

      Click the Windows "Start" button.

      Click on the "Computer" option from the context menu.

      Right-click on the drive that the chkdsk utility is to scan.

      Select "Properties" from the context menu.

    • 6

      Click the "Tools" tab on the Disk Properties menu.

      Click the "Check Now" button in the first section titled "Error-Checking."

      Select the scan options in the Check Disk Local Disk menu by checking or unchecking the check boxes next to the "Automatically Fix File System Errors" and/or the "Scan For And Attempt Recovery of Bad Sectors" options.

      Click the "Start" button to start the scan. If the disk is in use, the prompt to run the utility during the next computer start-up will appear. If the disk is not in use, the chkdsk will start to run immediately.

      Click the "Schedule Disk Check" button to run the utility during the next computer start-up. The chkdsk utility will run.

      Allow the chkdsk utility to run a complete scan. The utility will find and correct disk errors. Once finished, the utility will provide a log of all corrections made to the drive.

Tips & Warnings

  • The chkdsk utility must have exclusive access to the drive to be checked. In Vista, the user may be prompted to run the utility during the next operating system start-up. On large drives, the chkdsk utility will require at least a few hours to complete the scan.
