Instructions

    • 1

Measure out from the side of the house to the desired length of the low-level deck. Place the 16 by 16 by 4-inch concrete pads every 48 inches. Repeat this for the other three measurements of the deck.

    • 2

Place a 2 by 8-inch board on a work table. Measure from one end and then mark the length of the first measurement found in Step 1. Cut two boards at this length. Next, cut two more for the measurement that is parallel to the house.

    • 3

Place the lumber on the pads in their respective places. Drill pilot holes with the 1/8-inch drill bit on two of the pieces. This must be done where the lumber pieces meet. Secure the corners with deck screws. If the deck is wider than 8 feet, add a center 2 by 8-inch board to support the deck boards.

    • 4

Measure and cut the deck boards to the needed length. Beginning at the outer edge and working your way to the house, install the deck boards with the deck screws. It may be necessary to rip the width of the last deck board for a proper fit.

    • 5

Separate the deck boards about 1/8-inch to allow for rainwater drainage and expansion during hot months. Spray or brush on deck sealer according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Tips & Warnings

  • Drill pilot holes through 2 by 4-inch deck boards. Laying a sheet of plastic under the deck before installation can reduce the amount of grass that grows through the deck boards.

  • Always wear safety glasses when using a circular saw. Do not leave power tools unattended in the presence of children.
