Instructions

The ruler, a good practice tool for measurement.

Choose an object that is easy to measure and has a straight edge. A ruler may be a good choice since it is of fixed distance and is an easy object with which to compare your measurement.

The measuring tape in a tape measure.

Slowly draw out the measuring tape from the tape measure by pulling on the metal end. Begin from one end of the object you are measuring, and pull the tape towards the other end.

Here the black switch just above the tape is an example of a locking mechanism.

Stop drawing out more tape when you have reached the other end of the object you are measuring. Look for a button to push or slide that will lock the measuring tape at its current length (most tape measures have one).

Reposition the tape measure such that the metal end of the tape is on an end of the object, and the origin of the tape is on the other end.

Read and record the distance indicated by the tape measure. In order of increasing height, the tick marks between inches on the tape measure represent 1/16, 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 inches. The large numbers on the tape represent inches, and for every 12, there will also be a foot measurement.

A more advanced application of the tape measure.

Keep measuring objects of fixed length until you are comfortable bending the tape measure around corners and wrapping it around objects to get their lengths in inches.

Tips & Warnings

  • Consider beginning with an automatic lock tape measure. This kind of tape measure locks as soon as you stop pulling it out and only retracts when you press a button.

  • Be careful when retracting a tape measure. It can cut you if it is too close to your skin. Replace a tape measure if it has split or bent beyond repair to avoid both injuries and inaccurate measurements.
