How to Clean a Mustang Convertible Top

The thick canvases and vinyls used to construct the convertible tops on Ford Mustangs are designed to stand up to the elements. But while normal year-round weather may not penetrate the roof, the top will still pick up plenty of dirt, stains and debris such as leaves and twigs. Every so often, it's important to give the convertible top a thorough cleaning. It will improve the appearance of the car, and by keeping dirt and oils off of the cloth top, you will also extend its life.

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the top is fully closed and locked into place, and that all of the Mustang's windows are rolled up.

    • 2

Mix 2 or 3 tbsp. of car wash liquid or dish soap in a bucket of clean, cold water. Stir the water around a bit to generate some suds.

    • 3

Brush off the convertible top with a dry, firm-bristled brush. Make sure the top is completely clear of leaves, sticks and other loose debris. Check in the shallow ridges all around the edges of the convertible top, especially along the rear window, as these tend to collect small pieces of debris.

    • 4

Soak a car wash mitt or washing rag in the soapy solution and use it to scrub the entire cloth surface of the convertible top. Scrub in several large circles and work in an even pattern. Dip the rag or mitt back in the soapy solution every minute or so as you scrub. If your top is very dirty and it gets your cleaning material dirty, you may need to switch rags midway.

    • 5

Rinse all of the suds and dirt off the top with a hose.

    • 6

Examine the top closely for difficult, sticky stains. If you see any, pour a small amount of liquid adhesive remover on the stain and scrub it with an old toothbrush. When this loosens the stain, switch back to the wet, soapy rag and scrub the rest of the stain away, then rinse the area with the hose.

    • 7

Allow the top to air dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Do not try to use adhesive remover to remove the tough black lines that tend to form along the crossbars on non-black convertible tops. These lines are best cleaned with thorough and routine scrubbing with a mild soapy solution. The lighter your convertible top is in color, the more frequently you will need to work to keep these lines from becoming prominent.

  • Never use bleach on a convertible top. In general, you should always favor mild soaps and chemicals, as harsh cleaning solutions can cause the all-weather fabrics to become brittle and crack at the folds.
