How to Fix a CRC Error on a Memory Stick

Memory sticks and other portable hard drives are growing increasingly useful, especially with the size of files growing larger and larger. They give you the ability to transport data from one computer to another. However, sometimes a CRC error will occur. A CRC error, which means the data cannot be read, is normally caused during the data transfer, where part of the file becomes corrupted. The only way to rectify this problem is to recopy the information.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the memory card into the computer used during the original data transfer. In a few moments the computer will state that new hardware has been detected.

    • 2

Navigate to the file that was originally transferred. Leave this window open.

    • 3

Open the memory stick folder. This can be done by double-clicking "My Computer," then select the "Removable Device."

    • 4

Drag the original file into the memory stick. You will be told a file by that name already exists and asked if you'd like to replace it. Click "Yes." Now when you attempt to open the file in the memory stick, the CRC error will not appear.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you do not have the original file on a computer, or if the computer is not accessible, you can download a CRC file repair tool. This is a great tool; however it is not always capable of recovering the desired files.
