SMTP servers can be configured on most email clients and allow users to send emails from their computers without having to sign into a web-based email service. In order to receive emails, you will also need to configure a POP or IMAP server.

Instructions

  1. Outlook Express

    • 1
      Accounts

      Go to "Tools > Accounts" in Outlook Express.

      Add new Mail account

      Click on "Add", then select "Mail".

      Display name

      Enter your name as you want it to appear for recipients of your emails.

      Email address

      Enter your email address.

      SMTP server name

      Enter the SMTP server name that you will be using.

      Properties

      Go to the properties of the account you added.

      Authentication

      Select if your SMTP server requires authentication in the Servers tab. Fill in the authentication settings if it does.

      Advanced settings

      Select if the SMTP server requires SSL and set the port number in the Advanced tab.

    Mac Mail

      Preferences

      Select "Preferences" in the Mail menu.

      Edit Server List

      Go to Edit Server List in the Accounts tab.

      SMTP server

      Enter your SMTP server name.

      Advanced settings

      Select port number and authentication type. Authentication type is usually none or password.

Tips & Warnings

  • The SMTP server does not have to match the POP or IMAP server for the email account. They each work independently.

  • If the email address you are using is not provided by your Internet service provider the SMTP server may be blocked to prevent spam.
