How to Make a Toy Horse
A hobby horse is a children's toy that has been popular for generations. Creating your own hobby horse not only ends with a fun toy, but also is a creative outlet as you decorate the horse head in the style of your choosing.
Things You'll Need
- 2-by-8-by-8-inch wood block
- Pencil
- Jigsaw
- Sandpaper
- Drill with 1- and 1/4-inch bits
- Paint
- 1-inch-wide gold ribbon
- Wood glue
- 1-inch wooden pole, 3 feet long
Instructions
-
-
1
Draw the outline of a horse head on the wood block. Ensure that there is at least 6 inches linearly from the neck of the horse into the head for the pole to fit into.
-
2
Cut the head out with a jigsaw.
-
-
3
Sand the edges of the head to round the corners, so the head does not splinter.
-
4
Drill a hole in the neck of the horse head with the 1-inch bit, centered across the 2-inch width. Be sure to leave at least 1 inch of wood between the end of the hole and any edge of the wooden head.
-
5
Paint a face on your hobby horse, complete with a bit by the horse's mouth.
-
6
Drill a 1/4-inch hole through the center of the bit. Push the ribbon through the hole in the bit, and tie it at a desired length to make reins.
-
7
Put glue into the hole in the bottom of the head's neck, and around the top of the pole, and insert the pole into the neck as far as the drilled hole will allow. Let it dry.
