How to Make Bird Feeders for Chidren's Crafts
Helping children make their own bird feeders is a great way to get them excited about birds. They can hang their bird feeders, watch the different kinds of birds come to eat, and maybe even learn their different calls.

Bird Treat
-
1
Cut the bread with the cookie cutter. Make a hole near the top of the shape with a plastic knife and thread yarn through the hole.
-
2
Set the bread out for a day to become stale, which makes it easier to work with.
-
-
3
Pour some birdseed onto a paper plate. Spread a mixture of shortening and peanut butter on both sides of the bread shape. Coat the bread with birdseed.
-
4
Hang the bird feeder on a tree or outside your window.
Reusable Bird Feeder
-
5
Take an empty cardboard milk carton--the kind that comes together at the top--and drill a hole through the top from one side of the peak to the other. Thread a piece of yarn or ribbon through the top and tie it in a loop so that you can hang your bird feeder.
-
6
Cut a few golf-ball-size holes a few inches from the bottom of the carton .
-
7
Decorate the outside of the carton with sticks using a hot glue gun. Glue a few sticks sticking out near the holes for the birds to rest on while they eat.
-
8
Open the milk carton like you would to pour milk. Use a large funnel to fill the feeder with birdseed.
-
9
Hang the feeder in a tree and wait for the birds to come.

Tips & Warnings
Use a bagel instead of a slice of bread for the bird treat if you don't want to wait a day for the bread to harden.
A parent should do the drilling and hot gluing for the child.
