Milk isn't a requirement for a good batch of French toast. If you are out of milk but have another dairy product in the house, such as half and half or liquid coffee creamer, you can substitute a splash for the milk. A lactose-free recipe still makes a wonderful hot breakfast. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 3 eggs
  • 3 slices of bread
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla
  • Salt to taste
  • Syrup (optional)
  • Powdered sugar (optional)

Instructions

      Combine the eggs, nutmeg, cinnamon, sugar, vanilla and a pinch of salt in a shallow dish. Mix until the eggs are well-beaten and the spices are incorporated.

      Heat a frying pan over medium or preheat your electric skillet. If your pan is not nonstick, use cooking spray or butter.

      Soak both sides of a slice of bread in the egg mixture until it is coated and then place the bread in the pan. Flip the toast when it is golden brown on the bottom.

      Sprinkle some powdered sugar on top of the French toast and serve with fresh fruit or supply warm syrup.

Tips & Warnings

  • Tweak the seasonings to suit your taste -- and your pantry. Try allspice or pumpkin pie spice, or a different flavored extract.

  • Substitute liquid eggs at a rate of 1/4 cup per whole egg.
