It is easy to spot the emo crowd wherever you go. Some mistakenly think that the emo look is goth. This is not true. Emo is actually a music genre that originated from hardcore punk. Emo is not just a look or a choice of music. It is, to some, a way of life.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • black, zip-up hoodie
  • the right haircut
  • black eyeliner
  • black nail polish
  • black or navy skinny jeans
  • tight-fitting concert tee
  1. Step 1

Cut your hair. The right haircut is essential. For boys, short and choppy is the ultimate emo hair. For girls, longer hair with lots of layers and razor-cut bangs is important. It is very common for emo girls to have blonde chunks in their hair. Bright-colored chunks such as lime green or pink are becoming increasingly popular.

  2. Step 2

Wear the right makeup. You will need tons of black eyeliner. The paler your skin, the better. You will want the contrast of the black eyeliner to be extreme. Some people have even applied lightening foundation. But being real white is not critical to look emo and you don't want your skin to look freakish.

  3. Step 3

Apply black nail polish. Black is almost always worn by the emo crowd.

  4. Step 4

Squeeze into black or navy skinny jeans. These are a must. Your skinny jeans will need to be accompanied by a studded leather belt. If you are a boy that wants to look emo, you can sometimes find just the right skinny jeans in the girls section.

  5. Step 5

Step out in Converse shoes. Never be seen in any current and trendy shoes.

  6. Step 6

Wear an old concert tee. If you bought your tee at the thrift store, that is even better!

  7. Step 7

Cover your concert tee with a black, zip-up jacket. The jacket can be blank or have a cool band's logo on the back of it. You will notice that no matter what the weather is, the kids in the emo crowd have on their black jackets.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you need a way to carry your things and still have the right emo style, carry a messenger bag. Make sure it is complete with patches from all of the cool concerts you have surely attended.
