Step 1
Find storage for all of your receipts. Placing your receipts in a shoe box is fine, as long as you place those shoe boxes in a container that will keep them together. Try file cabinets or plastic storage containers. Storage containers that are normally used for crafts work exceptionally well. They have all sorts of drawers and “cubbies” of different sizes. They are usually compact, sturdy and easy to move.
-
Step 2
Create a personal system of organizing your receipts that works for you. Try organizing your receipts according to date, type of receipt or even alphabetically. Combine those different ways to organize your receipts. Use trial and error to find what works best for you.
-
Step 3
Have a special place for all your receipts regarding taxes. Create sections for your tax receipts such as federal, state, local, income, personal property and business. Create a special section for receipts that may or may not be tax-deductible that you can research later or speak with your tax preparer about.
-
Step 4
Label everything. Place labels on the sides and top of all your receipt storage containers. Use a permanent marker in a bold color that will not smudge. Label the specific files in your storage containers so you know exactly what is in those files. Remember to add the dates to those files as well.
