How to Become an Outstanding Teacher
Teachers have a tremendous responsibility to their students. They're not only responsible for giving academic instruction, but they also often provide encouragement and moral guidance to their students. Before deciding to become a teacher, you first need to ask yourself if you have the patience, commitment and strong work ethic that's needed to work in the classroom. You also need to be able to handle students of various ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds and not have preconceived notions based on those backgrounds.

Encourage and motivate your students. If a student is struggling with writing essays and this hurts his confidence, tell him that you know he can improve his writing skills, and that you'll do what's necessary to help him. Or if another student says she wants to be a nurse, tell her the educational requirements and skills that she'll need for this profession, and suggest books on this topic so she can research it further.

Find creative ways to engage your students. If you're teaching a Spanish class, make the learning experience fun by developing special projects that will help the students learn the language in a fun way. For example, if you're teaching a lesson on business Spanish, have the students present a mock news program in Spanish about economic issues in Latin America.

Stay up to date on the latest trends in your profession. Join a local teachers' organization and attend their meetings. Also network with fellow teachers in the organization and ask for ideas on how you can remain innovative as a teacher while still adhering to state requirements regarding the curriculum for students. If necessary, take some college courses which could help you improve your teaching skills.
