There are two types of deck awnings: stationary and retractable. Stationary awnings do not move and require you to install it to the side of your house. Retractable awnings also have to be installed, but they have the option of rolling up and out of the way. Some people say that with stationary awnings may not be good for resale.
Retractable awnings last longer and have less maintenance due to their ability to stay out of harsh weather. They offer a wonderful look to the outside of your home at a cheaper price then the stationary types.

Cloth deck awnings are less expensive, so they allow you to cover a bigger area. They provide a place to cool off during those hot summer months and protect from those harmful UV rays. On the downside, there is more maintenance involved. Strong winds and hail storms can cause the awning to rip and really only provides shelter in a light drizzle. However, if you choose to the retractable awning you would just need to remember to close it.
