Match your sunscreen to your skin type.

Medical experts agree that in addition to avoiding the sun during its peak hours and wearing protective clothing, you should always apply a sunscreen before you head outdoors. While any sunscreen you choose should have a sun protection factor (SBF) of at least 15, the right one for you should also be based on your skin type. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Look for a sunscreen that is hypoallergenic and fragrance-free if you have sensitive skin. Look on the label for the minerals titanium dioxide and zinc oxide. Both of these are sunblocks that sit on top of your skin instead of being absorbed into it.

If you have dry skin, avoid alcohol-based sunscreens, which can dry your skin even more. Instead, choose a lotion or cream with added hydrating ingredients, like glycerin and aloe, for best results. Avoid sprays, which are often alcohol-based.

    • 3

If you have acne-prone skin, stay away from heavy or sticky-feeling sunscreens, as they can clog your pores and cause more acne. Look for a light, oil-free lotion that contains both avobenzone and oxybenzone.

Choose a grease-less formula if you have oily skin. Make sure you do not buy a sunscreen with mineral oil as an ingredient.

Tips & Warnings

  • Whatever your skin type is, your sunscreen will only work if you apply it liberally at least 30 minutes before you head out in the sun, and reapply it every two hours or so.

  • If you're a swimmer or a sports enthusiast who perspires a lot, look for a long-wearing, waterproof formula.
