How to Recover Corrupt AutoCAD Files
Files most frequently become corrupted when the computer is interrupted while writing information to the file. For example, if you are saving an AutoCAD project and the computer loses power during the few seconds it takes to save, the file could be corrupted. Hardware problems like damaged sectors on a hard drive could also cause a file to write improperly. Whatever the cause of corruption, there are several programs available online that may be able to salvage your damaged AutoCAD files.

Try GetData's "Recover My Files." This general purpose recovery program works for any file type, including AutoCAD. Users provide the location of the damaged files and the program creates a list of the files it can attempt to recover. This simple-to-use interface could be especially important if you are a beginner computer user.

Use "VirtualLab" by BinaryBiz. This is another general purpose recovery tool that works much the same way as GetData's. Choosing this program makes the most sense if you only need to recover a small amount of data. The original download comes with a trial version that allows you to recover up to one megabyte of information for free. The price for further recovery is based on the amount of information you need to recover.

Download "PC Inspector File Recovery" by Convar. This program requires more setup and lacks the stream-lined interface of the other two programs listed but is worth a chance because it is available for free download and use. The extra time it takes to use the program will prove well worth the money you save if you only need to recover corrupt AutoCAD files one time.

Tips & Warnings
Recover the corrupted AutoCAD files as soon as possible. The longer you continue to use the computer, the more likely that portions of the files will be overwritten by new data.
