1
Set up a storage system for your food that discourages mice and rats from eating it. Install shelves in a closet and store grains, cereals and other foods that attract rodents in plastic, airtight containers. By keeping all of your food in one location, you can better keep rodents out of it.

2
Plant mint around the foundation of your house. Also soak cotton balls in peppermint extract and place them in your house in your food closet and at places where you suspect mice and rats are getting in. Rodents are repelled by the scent of mint.

3
Stuff mouse holes with steel wool. Mice and rats won't be able to chew through it like they can other substances you might use to fill or block these holes, such as newspaper or wood.

4
Sprinkle baby powder on the floor around the place you suspect mice are getting in. Set a cracker with peanut butter on it in the center. The mice will walk across the powder to get the cracker and you'll be able to tell from their footprints where the mice are coming in. This way, you can block their entrance.
