When you finally decide to upgrade to a better mattress, what do you do with the old one? There are a few options and they are all pretty simple!

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

If you are replacing your old mattress with a brand new one, ask the company you are buying your mattress from if they will remove the old mattress. Many companies offer this service free of charge with the purchase of a new mattress. They will remove the old mattress when they deliver the new one.

  2. Step 2

Donate your old mattress to charity. There are plenty of places that may be willing to help remove your old mattress for the needy. Call local shelters, crisis centers or churches, they may be able to arrange to have someone come pick up the mattress for you. However some charities will not take used mattresses for sanitary reasons, so this may or may not work depending on their regulations.

  3. Step 3

List your old mattress on Craigslist or Freecycle. Depending on the condition, you can either list it in the Free section or list it for Sale, just be sure to include in the ad that the person wanting the mattress must pick it up from your location.

  4. Step 4

Go to the Earth 911 website and see if there is a location near you where you can recycle your mattress. Your mattress can be separated for parts and used for making other things, including new mattresses.

  5. Step 5

Call your local dump/garbage service and see if you can arrange to have them come and pick up your larger item for you. If you have access to a truck or larger vehicle in which you can strap the mattress to, you can haul it to the dump yourself. This should be your last option however, as mattresses fill up land fills and there is probably a way it can still be put to use.

Tips & Warnings
  • Depending on your neighborhood ordinances, you could always leave it out on the curb for a day with a "FREE" sign and see if somebody takes it away.

on 7/21/2009 Great article and I like the reuse idea. My son used an old one in side yard for his dogs to lay on.. They loved it. Lasted quite a while until rainy season. If you are buying newe mattress pay attention to warranty!
