How to Polish Slate Floors

Slate floor tiles are made from solid rock that is basically clay compacted and re-crystallized on one side. Cracks are very normal and are sometimes seen as decorative.

Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Make sure to clean off dirt and other debris from the slate floor. A neutral cleaner, commercially bough or home made, can be used as long as these do not take away the shine. Some of the brands that are suggested include Stonetech or EZkleen. Remember to check if the contents of the cleanser you will be using include acid- acid causes the slate to break down.

  2. Step 2

    Using a cotton string mop, apply stone sealer to the slate flooring. Sealants should be applied in two coatings.

  3. Step 3

    If the slate flooring has already been waxed before, strip it off first with a wax stripper. You can use a nylon bristled brush to break up the wax.

  4. Step 4

    Mop the floor to get rid of the broken down wax. Wet the mop with clean water to take away all residues.

  5. Step 5

    Apply a new coating of wax, you can use home made waxes or commercially bought waxes such as beeswax for slate flooring. You will need to use a clean rag to apply and buff the flooring. After ten minutes, buff the floor again using a new rag.
