Napkins may be a small decorative touch to your dinnerware collection--but they can definitely give your table presentation a flare. If you have some spare time, why not create your own napkins? Whether you want to have a more elegant, formal set--or a casual, fun style--it is all up to you and your creative hands. Check out my ideas for creating your own dinnerware napkins. Does this Spark an idea?

Start out with a solid color fabric. If you do not want to sew your own napkin you can definitely go to any home goods store to purchase one. Find a color that matches your dinnerware collection. If you want to create a napkin set just for summer, try some brighter colors like teal or yellow. Don't be scared to use these bright colors; you can still create a napkin that is classy without going tacky.

Acrylic fabric paint is an easy way to decorate your napkin. Start by finding a design you like and draw it on a piece of paper. Printing out your design can also be an option. Once you are satisfied with your design you can transfer your design onto the napkin using graphite transfer paper. Make sure the napkin and the transfer paper is securely taped to the surface. Once the design is transferred, carefully apply the fabric paint using paintbrushes. Once you finish, hang the napkin and let dry for 48 hours (see Resources below for links to places that sell graphite transfer paper).

Beads will add glamour and decorative detail to your napkins. Your pattern or design doesn't have to be very complicated; they can be geometric shapes or simple motifs along the side of the napkin. You can sew the beads directly onto the napkin after you trace the design onto the napkin. The beads can also be used to create beaded napkin rings. All you need is any type of beads and silver tone/gold tone beading wire. I like to braid the beads together to create a more intricate style napkin ring.
