Instructions

    • 1

Measure and cut a 28 1/2-inch-by-52 1/2-inch fabric piece for the bed skirt base. This is the part of the bed skirt that will be laid on the crib spring underneath the mattress. Measure and cut four lengths of fabric 11 inches wide by 3 1/2 yards long for the bed skirt ruffle.

Match two bed skirt ruffles together with the right sides facing and pin together one short end. Sew the pinned end using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Match the other two ruffles together, and sew the same way. Open the ruffle pairs and iron the seams open. Match the two bed skirt ruffle squares together with the right sides facing, and pin together the short ends on each end of the ruffles. Sew the pinned ends together. The bed skirt ruffle is now a continuous ring. Iron the seams open.

Fold one long side of the ring to the wrong side 1/4 inch and press. Fold 1/4 inch again, press and pin. Top stitch the pinned edge, creating the hem of the bed skirt. Tie a knot in the end of the crochet thread. Place the crochet thread along the raw edge of the bed skirt. Zigzag stitch over the crochet thread all the way around the ring of the bed skirt. Cut the thread, and knot the other end.

Place the raw edge of the ruffle along the raw edge of the bed skirt base with the right sides together. Pin one seam of the ruffle to the center of one short end of the base, the next seam to the center of one long end, the next to the center of the other short end and the last seam to the center of the other long side. Pull the ends of the crochet thread to gather the ruffles up even with the edges of the base. Adjust the ruffles so they are distributed evenly. Pin the edges to the base. Sew the ruffle to the base using a 1/2-inch seam allowance. Cut the knots from the crochet thread, and remove the thread.

Lay the bed skirt on your work surface with the right side up. Measure an inch from a short side of the base, and mark on the long side seam. Repeat on the other end of the long side. Turn the bed skirt around, and mark the other long seam in the same way for a total of four marks. At the marks, draw a 2-inch line that intersects the across the seam with one inch on the skirt base and one inch on the ruffle. Sew 2-inch buttonholes on these marks. These button holes will accommodate the crib spring hooks, and the ruffle will hang smoothly.
