Owning a dog that has long hair makes it necessary to be groomed often. Dogs that are show dogs have to be clipped according to their breed and would need a professional dog groomer to cut their hair. Owners of pet long haired dogs can learn how to groom their dogs hair and save money. Grooming by a trained groomer, is expensive and the prices fluctuate depending on where you live. Dogs that are personal pets could easily have their owners cut and trim their hair at home saving them money. Trimming a dog can be costly.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • dog shampoo
  • clippers
  • towel
  • water hose (optional)
  • bath tub (optional)
  • Plastic tub (optional)
  • Towels
  1. Step 1

Wash the dog's hair either outdoors or inside the house. Put your dog in the bathtub to keep water from going all over the kitchen floor. Pour water over the dog to wet him. Pout some dog shampoo directly on, and rub gently until you get a lot of lather. Start at the head and work towards the rear of the dog. Rinse off the suds and dry with a towel.

  2. Step 2

Remove the dog from the tub, and stand him a towel on the floor. Brush him lightly and completely using a dog brush. Always begin working from the head towards the tail.

  3. Step 3

Use the clippers to clip the dog and do not go down to the skin. Just remove the outer coat that is too long. Think of it as a trim, as you would have if you went to the barber.

Tips & Warnings
  • Trim in the direction of how the hair grows
  • Clip or cut well away from the dog's skin. It is better to simply give your pet a light trim than cut into his skin and cause bleeding or possibly an infection.
