You see the lightning, but you are having fun outdoors. You are not ready to go inside because it is not raining. You figure a little lightning is nothing; therefore you are not concerned. If it starts to rain with the lightning, you will go and stand under a tree. Should you be concerned? Below are five steps on how you can protect yourself from lightning strikes.

    Go inside the house. If you are not at home, you can go inside an office building. Whatever type of enclosed building you decide to seek shelter in, make sure that you do not touch any metal, for lightning is attracted to conductive materials like metal. Make sure the building is enclosed, not open, for example, like porches and gazebos.

    Understand that lightning is no respecters of houses. In other words, what your house is made of and how the roof is shaped matters.

    Check your insurance policy. Checking your policy is important because you need to make sure that you have enough insurance to replace your house and the contents. Simply put, having enough insurance is a protection if lightning damages your house.

    Make sure you have an evacuation plan. Have drills regularly, so everyone in the household will know what to do.

    Get a lightning protection system. No – a lightning protection system cannot stop lightning from striking your house; however, it can stop lightning from destroying your house.
