Oops --- the string came out of your sweatshirt hood or out of the waistband of your sweatpants -- what to do?? Read on...

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Pull the string all the way out of the shirt or pants.

  2. Step 2

Find a large safety pin, or a long barrette, paperclip, or hairpin. If you can't find any of those, look for an old shoelace with a plastic tip.

  3. Step 3

Attach the string to whichever implement you have. If you have a safety pin, push the pointed end into one end of the string, and close the safety pin. If you have a long barrette, open the barrette and close it on an end section of the string. If you have a paperclip, open the paperclip so it is one flat section of two long "u's" and see if you can "thread" the string onto the paperclip. If this doesn't work, tie the string to one end of the paperclip. If you are using a long hairpin, tie the string to the "u" end. If you are using an old shoestring, first tie a knot at one end of your shirt or pants string. Then, tie the shoestring to the string right under the knot you've just made.

  4. Step 4

Push whatever implement you have tied to your string (safety pin, barrette, paper clip, hairpin, or shoestring) into the hole the string for your hood or pants just fell out of. Using your fingers, slowly manipulate the object through the channel in your shirt or pants towards the other end. Manually push the object through the material, pushing and pulling with your fingers. If the material bunches up, hold the implement inside securely with the fingers on one hand and smooth out the material with the other. Keep manipulating the implement until it makes it to the other end.

  5. Step 5

Pull the implement out of your shirt or pants until the string itself emerges. When it does, of course unhook it from the implement, and tie a larger knot in each end of the string in your pants or shirt (so this won't happen again!).

on 7/26/2009 Great tips! A drawstring came out of my cargo pants, I manipulated the string back in but it took forever. I'll try the safety pin next time, should help a lot.
