How to Create a Simple Ribbon Rack
Organization and storage is so important when you have an over abundance of craft supplies. Spools of ribbon are one of those things that seem to multiply in a craft room and finding a functional way to store them and still be able to access them easily can sometimes feel like an ongoing problem. This simple ribbon rack is made of salvaged shutters and scrap lath, and can be assembled quickly. The tilt of the rack allows the ribbon to drape over the edge without fear of the spools rolling off. This simple ribbon rack does not require a dowel to be threaded through the spool centers, which allows the ribbon to be easily removed from the rack, if needed.
Things You'll Need
- Shutter pair
- Screwdriver
- Measuring tape
- Scrap lath
- Scrap 2-by-4-inch board

1
Remove the hinges that are connecting the shutter pair together. Turn the shutter pair over and reattach the hinges on the opposite side. This will place the hinges on the same side as any knobs and the spines that open the shutters, and will allow the shutter ribbon rack to hang flat against the wall. While the shutters pair can be any size, the ones used here are 6 3/4 inches wide by 26 1/4 inches long.

2
Measure and cut two pieces of scrap lath, 10 inches long. Fold one shutter up and place it against a flat object to hold it at a 90-degree angle. This is the back of your ribbon rack. Lift up the front, long edge of the shutter that is laying on your work surface and place a scrap of 2-by-4-inch board under the edge to tilt it. This is the shelf for your ribbon rack. The tilt will prevent the ribbon spools from rolling off the shelf.

Place a lath piece angled flat against the short ends on one end of the ribbon rack, from one outside corner edge to the other. Allow the excess to hang past the edges. Use a staple gun to attach the lath to the end of the ribbon rack. Repeat for the other end.

4
Cut the excess from the end of the lath that hangs over the ends of the ribbon rack, using the jigsaw. Turn the ribbon rack around and attach the two hanger hardware sets to the back, just below the top edge and 1 inch from the ends.
