Stay Positive at Work
Stay Positive at Work

You will learn how to cope with office politics and maintain a professional and positive attitude.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A job
  • Open mind
  • Willingness to try new things
  1. Step 1

Waking up hating your job every morning is not healthy however most of us experience it, even in times of recession which we should be thankful for having a job, you still experience that sickening feeling of having to go into the office and dealing with the inexperienced, unprofessional and office politics. Well I am going to try and offer the best advice that I can. I have worked in the 'corporate world' for many years now and their is a certain way to play the game.

  2. Step 2

You should always arrive at least 15 minutes early, I know this might be difficult to do with traffic, kids, etc.. but I guarantee that if you come in at least 15 minutes before your shift begins it allows you not to feel pressured and stressed. You can move at your leisure until it is time for you to begin work.

  3. Step 3

Make sure you have some type of breakfast, I am not to fond of eating at 7 or 8 in the morning either but if you have some orange juice, bagel anything to take the edge off, you will be more productive and less likely to have an attitude toward your work and co-workers.

  4. Step 4

Do not involve yourself in gossip, of course it is interesting to hear the latest drama in the workplace but why concern yourself with someone else problems, if you don't have enough on your own no need to create any.

  5. Step 5

Find the good in what you are doing. I don't care if you are flipping burgers at McDonald's or creating the next big music video for an artist. Understand that what you are doing is somehow making a difference and it is because you are taking the time to do it. Putting your best foot forward is always a great reflection on yourself.

  6. Step 6

Come back from breaks on time. I know I know ... there are thousands of people who stroll in whenever they please from breaks and lunches and for some reason they seem to get away with it. HOWEVER do not include yourself in that bunch. Remaining professional and honest at a job will one day pay off, those managers are watching who is consistently late and who is consistently on time, and when review time comes this is something you can put out on the table that you have perfect attendance.

  7. Step 7

Last put not least, advise your manager that you are available to assist in any projects if needed this is not necessarily called 'brown nosing' BUT it does show that you have interest in the job which will stand out from the rest.

Tips & Warnings
  • Do not believe everything you hear.
  • Do not gossip or form cliques like you are in high school.
  • Do not be late
  • Do not complain out loud...if you hate your job that much express it at home, if the manager hears you they have all the more reason to get rid of you!!

on 9/29/2009 In addition, I tell my teens who are new to the work force: 1) not to lean agains things at work, and 2) not to use your cell phone, including texting, at work. Lean and text at break if necessary, but not until then! Thanks for the tips.
