How To Change Default File Permissions in XP

Windows XP manages the access that users or groups of users have to files and folders through permissions settings. Some groups, such as the Administrator group, have permission settings that allow members of the group to modify, read, write and otherwise control most files in Windows XP. Groups such as the Guest group have more restrictive permissions. Windows XP assigns default file and folder permissions as part of the Windows setup process. However, you can change the default file permissions in XP using Windows Explorer.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start" > "All Programs" > "Accessories" > "Windows Explorer". This opens a Windows Explorer window.

    • 2

Locate the file for which you want to change the default permissions.

    • 3

Right-click the file, then click the "Properties" link in the context menu. This opens the Properties window.

    • 4

Click the "Security" tab in the Properties window. This displays the default permissions for each group or user for the file you have selected.

    • 5

Select the "Allow" or "Deny" check box in the Permissions section to change the file's default permissions for the desired group or user.

    • 6

Click the "Apply" button, then click the "OK" button to close the Properties window and complete the process.
