Explains how to make a 90 degree angle cut, without using a miter saw.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

This is for those of you who do not have a miter saw to cut a 90 degree angle, although the miter saw does make a straight clean angle cut. This kind of cut is usually made for picture frames, window edge framing, door edge framings if you want these types of framing to be angle cuts. Below I will mention how to make and cut angle cuts for picture frames.

  2. Step 2

The tools you will need for this project is a miter saw if you have 1 if not you can use a skill saw, saber saw or a hand saw, hammer, medium grit sand paper, a clamp to hold the framing pieces on a work table tight for a straight cut and the metal picture frame tacks. For making these kinds of cuts and for everything to match, you need the same kind of wood, thickness and width, it is up to you if you want a decorative framing or not. The length and height do not need to be the same, because some pictures are not the same size on all sides. But get long enough wood for the length and height.

  3. Step 3

This is for the picture frames, Get your tape measure and you start out by measuring the height and width of the picture that is going to be framed. An easy way to do this is to get the framing pieces of wood along sides of the picture. Lay the picture on the floor the way you are going to hang it on the wall and put 1 framing piece of wood on each side left and right, then measure horizontal from 1 side to the other. This will be the measurements for the top and bottom cuts. Then get the framing piece that is going to be on the top of the picture and the bottom, laying the pieces of wood horizontal and measure and mark the measurements on the top of the piece of wood and the bottom. then draw a straight line from 1 mark to the other and cut. These cuts are going to be the straight cuts.

  4. Step 4

Now to measure and make the side cuts for the picture frame(s).Put the top and bottom pieces that have been cut already against the picture and measure from the top to the bottom. This will be the measurements for the side framing pieces. Now get the side pieces laying them on a work table vertical and measure and mark those measurements on those framing pieces. This will be the straight cuts for the side framing pieces. Then cut on the lines you made on both framing pieces.

  5. Step 5

Now to make the angle cuts for your picture frame. You begin by marking a line on each corner. On the top piece you would mark the top left and right. Just make a pencil mark on each corner and on the bottom piece you make marks on the bottom left and right corners and make marks on the corners of the side pieces in the same spots.

  6. Step 6

Next step is to make the marks for the angle cuts. Keep the frame pieces on the sides of the picture. Lay the 2 side frame pieces on the sides of top and bottom pieces and make sure the corners are even. then make a mark on the top and bottom pieces next to where the side frame pieces lay in each corner. Now make marks on the side frame pieces. Where the 2 side pieces lay on the top and bottom frame pieces, you put a mark in the same spot but on the side pieces. Now make a straight line from the corner to the angle marks. Then mark each frame piece, for the top frame piece you put top, for the bottom you write a B or bottom and the left and right sides with an R and L. just so you know where the pieces go. Then take everything apart and cut each angle. After cutting get your sand paper and sand the rough edges until smooth. Then put the pieces back together upside down and hammer in the picture frame tacks on each corner where the frame pieces meet.
