If you or a member of your family has allergies then it's probably a good idea to allergy proof your home. Allergy proofing your home won't get rid of all the allergens but it will go a long ways towards providing some relief from allergy symptoms. And this article on how to allergy proof your house will help you to get started.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

    Remove the carpets:
one of the first things that you should consider is removing the carpets. This is especially important if you suffer from a dust allergy. If this is not possible then make sure that the carpet is vacuumed twice a week preferably by someone who doesn't suffer from allergies.

  2. Step 2

    Allergy proof the bedroom:
First you will need to enclose your mattress, comforter and pillow in dust mite proof covers. Also be sure to wash your bed linens in hot water once a week. This will help to provide relief from allergy symptoms and kill the dust mites, but you to have to make sure and wash your linens every week. Otherwise a brand new batch of dust mites will hatch and you'll be right back where you started.

  3. Step 3

    Remove the curtains:
Blinds and curtains do a good job of attracting dust mites, so you would be much better off replacing them with shades. otherwise make the effort to wash them in hot water once a month.

  4. Step 4

Keep pets out of the bedroom:
Everyone loves their pets so I wouldn't dream of asking you to get rid of them. But it's also a good idea to keep the pets out of the bedroom so that you'll at least have one allergen free zone. Cats can also be bathed once a week with a mild pet shampoo. This will cut down dramatically on your allergy symptoms. Also if your pet goes outdoors you need to wipe them down with a allergen free pet wipe to help remove pollen and dander from their fur.

  5. Step 5

    Keep the windows closed:
Be sure to keep the windows closed and instead run the AC to help keep pollen levels at a more bearable level. It's also a good idea to purchase a good air purifier, ideally a whole house air purifier would be best. But if this is not possible at least get one for your bedroom.

  6. Step 6

    Use a dust mite spray:
Anyone who suffers from asthma or severe allergy symptoms should probably consider using a dust mite spray. This will hep to neutralize your household allergens.
