Step 1
Choose a topicTopic. You need to select a topic to write about on your blog. I suggest that you choose a topic you feel passionate about or have expertise in. For example, if you are a stay at home mom who loves to knit then write about knitting and to make it more interesting for your readers by connecting it with your everyday life and give your readers a glimpse in your personal life. You can do so by sharing your day with them or your family pictures. This personal touch will not only make your blog stand out in the knitting community but will become a daily-read to those who have little or no interest in knitting.

Step 2
Choose a blogging platformPlatform for blogging. Second step will be to find out an accurate blogging platform which suits your requirements. It can get confusing with so many chooses available on net. If you are just starting then I suggest to choose from the most popular blogging platforms like WordPress.com, TypePad.com, Blogger.com. I found a chart comparing features between WordPress.com, TypePad.com, Blogger.com. Sure TypePad has a lot to offer but you don't necessarily need all those features. Keep it simple and less confusing by opting for the one which meets all your requirements.

Step 3
Choose an appropriate designDesign. Now that you have a house, you need to make it look like home and decorate it to welcome your guests. Each blogging platform has their preset designs that you could choose from or you can search online for free skins or templates which is complimentary to your theme. Check out this site for some wonderful free templates http://template-mama-freebloggertemplates.blogspot.com/.

Step 4
Promote. To reach your audience you'll need to promote your blog. The first step of promoting should be listing your blog in blog directories. Again, there are many. Some want you to register to submit your blog, some ask for a reciprocal link, some charge a minimal fee (or one time fee) and some are absolutely free. Let your friends know about your new blog on MySpace, Facebook, Twitter etc. Other quick thing you could do to micro promote your blog is add your blog's URL in your email signature that way each time you write an email you are promoting your blog.
