How to Stop a Mountain Board
A mountain board provides the same rush from speeding down the mountain and linking turns on a ski slope during the summer as snowboarding does in the winter -- but without the hassles of a ski parka. But while riding is fun, the most important skill knowing how to stop a mountain board.

The problem with most mountain boards is they don't come with brakes. Although they can be purchased, they are not always effective if you are going extremely fast. The power-sliding technique consists of making a sudden, sharp turn, which forces the board into a controlled slide that quickly brings the rider to a stop. It works every time.

To make a turn that will initiate a power slide rather than simply change direction requires you to throw your body weight into that turn by pivoting from the waist up. You can make a turn by shifting your weight from your toes to your heels or vice versa depending on which direction you want to turn. To make a power slide, you want to slide your back foot on the board out in the direction you wish the back of the board to slide in and shift your upper torso in the opposite direction. So if your back foot is going to the left your upper body is leaning to the right. This will result in a power slide with you facing to the right of your original downhill line.
You should first practice this slide on grass: It is softer to land on when you make a mistake. Once you know how to execute this maneuver, it is much easier to do on gravel.

In order to power-slide correctly, you should put more weight on your back foot (after you repositioned it on the board as outlined in Step 2) when you are turning. As you begin to feel the board slide, redistribute your weight so it is evenly distributed on both feet on the board. Make sure you have this technique down before you try to ride anything too steep.

You can also use the brakes if you decide to purchase them. This is simply a hand brake; when you squeeze the lever it will put pressure on the wheels. This will slow you, but if you are moving very fast it doesn't always stop you. So you will need to master the power slide as well.
