1
Increase the intensity of your weight-lifting routine. Use free weights and machines to maintain your muscle mass. A health club is the best place to get access to these machines, unless you have a large one at home (such as Bowflex). Lift weights three to four times a week or more.

2
Determine how much protein you should eat every day. If you are not fueling your muscles with protein, they will burn up during rigorous exercise. Your body needs protein to store, and when it doesn't have enough, it will take protein from your muscles. Use this calculation to determine your body's daily protein need: your body weight in pounds divided by 2.2 equals your weight in kilograms. Your weight in kilograms multiplied by 1.4 equals the grams of protein you need each day.

Consume the right amount of protein. Protein helps your muscles get bigger and heal from rigorous exercise. High-protein foods include poultry, beef, fish, peanut butter, protein shakes, protein bars, dairy products, beans, nuts and seeds.

Ditch traditional cardiovascular training for interval workouts, which alternate high-intensity and low-intensity exercise. Burning muscle is possible during cardio workouts. Intervals will help your body build and keep muscle, not burn it. If you like to jog for cardio, change it to interval. Sprint for one minute and then jog for two. Continue this until your jog time is over. Ten minutes is sufficient, but you can do it longer.

5
Start another high-intensity workout to ensure you are exercising all of your muscles and not just focusing on certain ones. Skiing, hiking, martial-arts training, rock climbing, and kickboxing can help you use cardio and build and maintain muscle while having fun.
