How to Install Network Cables

With the Internet becoming a household concept, it is important that computer users understand the basics of computer networking in order to avail themselves of Internet connectivity. Networking cables, known as ethernet cables, are the standard medium used to connect virtually every piece of networking hardware. Installing network cables is an exceedingly easy process that any computer user may accomplish.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate an available ethernet port on both pieces of networking hardware you wish to connect using ethernet cable. The ports are nearly identical to household telephone ports with the exception that they are much larger in size.

    • 2

Plug one end of the networking cable into one of the pieces of networking hardware. The connector on both ends of the ethernet cable are referred to as RJ-45 connectors; and, as previously noted, are keyed in a manner similar to that of a telephone jack. As such, they will only fit in one orientation and click securely into place.

    • 3

Connect the opposing end of the networking cable to the second piece of networking hardware, as was done in step 2. Again, this connection will click securely into place and only fit in one orientation.

Tips & Warnings

  • It is highly advisable that any excess networking cable is tucked neatly out of the way to avoid tripping accidents. Not only will tripping over the cord potentially cause injury, but it also may cause device damage, as the connectors lock into their respective networking hardware and will not easily pull out.
