If you have never cooked on a gas oven, the idea may be intimidating. While a gas oven is no more dangerous than an electric oven, the thought of an explosion from a leak or a burner left turned on does frighten some people. But a gas oven is more efficient, heating and cooling quicker than an electric oven.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Cookware
  1. Step 1

Turn the knob that controls the burner you will be using clockwise. You will usually find a label next to the knob that indicates which burner it controls.

  2. Step 2

Adjust the level of the gas by moving the knob, depending on the temperature you want to cook at. To turn the gas up and create more heat, turn the control knob clockwise. Turning the knob counterclockwise will decrease the temperature.

  3. Step 3

Cook on the oven top, also known as the range, as you would on an electric one.

  4. Step 4

Turn the gas burner off by turning the knob all the way counterclockwise. The heat will dissipate immediately. Your cookware and stove top will still be hot.

  5. Step 5

Turn the knob that controls the oven to the desired temperature. You may have another turn knob called a setting knob that you would set to bake or broil.

  6. Step 6

Allow the oven to preheat to the desired temperature.

  7. Step 7

Put your food into the oven and cook as you normally would in an electric oven.

  8. Step 8

After cooking, turn the temperature and setting knobs to the off positions.

Tips & Warnings
  • A gas flame is blue. If you do not see a blue flame but smell gas, turn your burner off immediately and wait a few minutes before you try to ignite the burner again. Some burners will make a clicking sound before the flame ignites. Wait until the series of clicks is finished before turning the gas higher.
  • The burners on a gas oven do not need to heat up, as they do on an electric oven. When the gas burner is turned on, instant heat is created.
