How to Help Your Toddler Sleep

  1. Step 1

Create a routine that you can stick to with your toddler. The routine should be age appropriate and not have too many steps. A 3 year old may only be able to handle a three step routine, whereas a 5 year old will be able to handle a five step routine. This should be a routine designed to get ready for bed time. Steps to include are brushing teeth, putting on pajamas and reading a book.

  2. Step 2

Allow your toddler to have some unwinding time before they start their bed time routine. Not many adults can come home from a long day of work and flop into bed. It is necessary for adults to unwind and relax to be able to get the rest they need and the same goes for toddlers. Give your toddler 15 minutes to half an hour to just hang out in their room quietly. They can look at picture books, draw a picture or do other activities during this time that are relaxing in nature.

  3. Step 3

After the down time have your toddler start their nightly routine. Always start the routine at the same time. A child's sleep schedule not being followed can lead to tantrums, stress and break downs that no parent wants to deal with. Help your child follow each step of the routine to prepare them for a good nights sleep.

  4. Step 4

Sit with your toddler on his or her bed and tuck them in. This comforts a child, which makes them relaxed and willing to go to sleep. Have them close their eyes while you read the story they picked out. Read the story with a soft lulling voice to help your toddler sleep.

  5. Step 5

Place a night light in the room for your toddler to help them become more comfortable. Often children have fears of the dark, monsters under the bed and bed bugs. A night light will help your child sleep by putting these fears to rest.
